NDIS Participant Shirley and Her Paintings

Our NDIS participant Shirley, shares about her rediscovered passion for art and painting. With weekly assistance and motivation from our support staff, this enables Shirley to have an increased focus to cultivate her skill-set to create new and unique paintings on an on-going basis.

"I’m a self-taught painter and I’ve been painting for two years. I hadn’t painted since High School. When I was in High school I entered one of my paintings (a portrait of my mother) into an art competition and it won first prize! My love of art stemmed from there.

It wasn’t until a couple of years ago out of the blue I decided to go down and buy some canvases and supplies and started painting. I took to it like a duck to water! I now have about 20 paintings.

I paint a range of styles including Aboriginal art, beach paintings, bird paintings, cockatoos, and owls. I mostly stick to landscapes and birds. I’m currently painting a Japanese temple.

I started painting for fun but I notice people who come over to my house take a look at my paintings and asked to buy them. I didn’t think they were any good, but people seem to like them a lot. I love giving my paintings away as gifts to friends and family. I’m now thinking of selling my paintings at stalls and entering art exhibitions.”
